CDR Sports Field Review

CDR Sports/July 27, 2008/

Overview
CDR Sports is located off of I-5 exit #218, south of Mt. Vernon. Today I played walk-on woods ball. The weather was rainy with humidity so high that most people at the field had some level of goggle fogging. They day started with some 3 on 4 but the games got bigger around noon when the rain let up and a birthday group arrived.

Prices
Field fee was $16 which included all day air/CO2
Paint was $45 a case

Staff
I want to preface this section by saying that I have extremely high expectation for how refs should perform. The ref’s at CDR did a good job, they were helpful and easy to find when you needed them. They kept the game safe which is their primary responsibility. They even went on a pizza run which they usually don’t do for so few players (when it was still 3 vs. 4). However, the following are a few improvements that can be made to bring the CDR refs up to the highest standard of what a referee can be.
1st. Don’t wait for someone to call for a paint check to get into the action, a great ref is always doing something, not waiting for someone to call him over. This may be minor
2nd. Start the next game sooner. As a paying customer, I want to play as many games as I can, I didn’t pay to stand around. If I am not ready and miss a game, then it’s on me and I can live with that.
3rd. No matter how much they want it, don’t let the birthday party, who have never played before, all be on the same team vs. the experienced players. I said before the game that it would be over in 2 minutes, it took 3. We do want new players to have a good experience and come back don’t we?
4th. This may not be a valid complaint depending on what how the staff at CDR is compensated, but I get confused when a ref is reffing one game, than playing the next game, then back to being a ref. If they are being paid to ref, then they should ref. Again, maybe they are only being paid to ref half the games, but if not, then they need to be reffing and not playing.
Again, I want to stress that I have high standards for refs and you can and will find worse refs then those at CDR.

Fields
CDR has 2.75 fields to play on. I say 2.75 because aside from the 1 air-ball field, there is one large field that was cut in half for most of the day to equal 1.75 fields. Anyway, 1 half of this field is the mounds field which as it sounds, has some dirt hills, one of which is quite large. There is also wooden structures added to the topography it provide extra cover. The other side is made of woods with nice stumps and thick trees and not much in terms of man made structure, just natural woods. There was a variety of starting locations which kept the fields fresh.

Amenities
The field has some chairs, tables and covered areas. There was 1 porta-potty. There is also a clean-up station with running water. Snacks and soda availible and Pizza was availible but apprently it isn't availible every day.

The M Corporation is one of the largest research companies in the world, with studies in nearly every field from agriculture to molecular physics. What is a little less known, even to the CEO of the M Corp. is the secret military research arm. A group without a name, their sole task is to develop new weapons, better soldiers, and push the boundaries of what modern science and engineering can do.

A molecular biologist, Dr. Gregori Mashkof was infatuated with the idea of a soldier who would be nearly impossible to kill, would never require sleep, and who's sole purpose would be to kill the enemy, without questions. Dr. Mashof developed "Cronus" for this very purpose. What he came up with so horrified even the secret division that he worked for, that he was fired from the M Corporation, his credentials ruined, and his research destroyed. Yet everything in life is about balance, you cannot have one without the other, yin and yang, and to this there was an anti-virus produced, "Zeus".

Dr. Mashkof, insulted, humiliated, angered by his former employer went rouge. In one last act before taking his own life, he unleashed Cronus on the population.

The M Corporation at first attempted to contain the outbreak, quarantining the victims underground, away from the public sight. However, this only worked for so long, and they escaped. The documents about the anti-virus and its sythesis destroyed in the cover up, The M Corporation only has a few vials in it's possesion and woefully short to contain the outbreak. So The M Corporation quickly moves to recover the last remaining vials of the anti-virus that Dr. Mashkof fled with before the infection spreads.......

The Scenario.
The countries of the world are facing doom from a new Weapon of Mass Destruction.
In a effort to become the worlds next supper power, China has contracted a Scientist to develop a new devastating weapon technology. The "Ionic Disruptor" Death Ray Bomb prototype was then lost during a secret transport mission. A Terrorist Organization is suspected sabotaged the transporting aircraft to crash in a specific location over the mountains of a small North-Pacific Island near the US Coast.
The United States has learned of this new weapon technology, and the aircraft crash through its anti-terrorism intelligence network. Now the U.S. has determined that it must acquire this new technology though covert means. The United stated has prepared an Elite Battalion of a highly trained commando force to recover the secret objective form the crash site.
Needless to say the Chinese Government is angry about the loss of its monumental investment. So they have decided to use a secret invasion army, trained for extremely brutal front-line combat to recover the Scientist and there property.
The Terrorist Organization that caused the crash has infiltrated both armies, and is preparing to take control of the WMD & Scientist. Terrorist operatives had been previously eliminated from both armies, so the remaining operatives have kept inactive to prevent further detection. Once Activated, the Terrorist Operatives from both armies will be working together to recruit more members and to capture the WMD & Scientist.

What to Expect it the WMD Scenario Game.
The WMD Scenario games are played differently from ESPB's normal games. Most notably is the game duration, player regeneration/re-spawn, and scavenger hunt.
ESPB's Scenario field is located in a natural pacific northwest rain forest landscape. Its rolling hills and thick jungle provides excellent cover, and is the ideal environment for camouflage, BDUs and Ghillie-Suits alike.
Because of the tough tertian at East Side Paintball, we recommend that you use heavy-duty footwear and clothing. We do not recommend the use of Jackets and Sweaters to protect agents paintball injuries. If you are worried, you can buy paintball chest protectors for relative little money at most sporting goods retailers.
We recommend that new players buy a mask with a "thermal lens" for there first paintball purchase. A good mask is the most important thing you have on the paintball field, because if you can see them, you won't get 'em, and they'll get you. Expect a good paintball mask to cost about $69 to $99 on up.
During the paintball game players will be looking for scavenger items on the field which are worth points and/or rank pins. Return the items found to the main tent for your prize!
Each game will last 2 to 3 hours, this means that players will be in the field much longer than during a normal game (which lasts about 20 to 30 minutes), so you will need to carry a lot of ammo and (most importantly) water.
When a player is shot out, the player will not need to leave the field or game (unless desired). When out, a player can have a medic heal there non-vital injury, or a player ( w/ vital or non-vital) can locate a re-spawn point held by there team, touch the flag, and return to the game.
Each player will be assigned a ID card which will track vital stats about the player. The card must be held by all players in the field, and must be presented upon request ( to field staff). Players who are unable to produce there ID card may be ejected from the field and may also be charged with trespassing.
Remember to drink lots of water!

Local Fields Added

Well, I’ve been working on the Blog as you can see. I added all the North West fields and team that I could find. If anyone out there knows of more, please leave a comment with the info and I will put it up.

So what’s next?

Two things. First, I will be post about upcoming scenario events in the North West. Again, your help in compiling this list will be appreciated. Our selection is unfortunately not that great compared to other parts of the country, but maybe we can work together with the fields to change that. Second, I am planning on visiting all of the fields in the North West and write a review about playing there. I will be starting with going to the Western Washington fields first, but I hope to start branching out and making all the fields, hopefully within a years time.

Lastly, I want to hear from you. Post your Review of a field or event, ask a question about something paintball or scenario related.

New Rifled Barrel from Tippmann

Following article found on Tippmann.com

"Tippmann Launches StraightLine™ Barrel with True Rifled Technology 6/12/2008New barrel designed specifically for Tippmann’s X7 and A-5 markers offers ultimate accuracy BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. Tippmann Sports is excited to launch a new, special edition StraightLine barrel for woodsball that was designed to complement the look of Tippmann X7 and A-5 markers. The new, 16"e; barrel was created through a partnership with HammerHead®, a longtime leader in paintball barrel design, and offers unmatched quality and performance characteristics.

Tippmann’s new StraightLine is a gun-drilled barrel that incorporates true rifling to enhance ball rotation for improved ball flight and unmatched accuracy. It includes three seamless connection sizers (.688, .686 and .683), which can be used to match the dimensions of a paintball to barrel radius for optimal air efficiency. It also features a removable, military-style muzzle break with reverse porting to enhance performance and provide an authentic look. The new StraightLine will fit all shrouds and foregrips for Tippmann’s X7 and A-5 markers.

"The StraightLine is a logical extension to our existing line of barrels, which includes the patented Flatline Barrel System and our Sniper barrel," said Patrick Ehren, vice president of sales and marketing for Tippmann Sports. "We’ve considered and tested numerous barrels over the years. However, it was paramount that we only introduce another Tippmann barrel if it was truly innovative and offered superior accuracy and efficiency characteristics when compared to other, similarly priced barrels. And, after months of testing and working closely with our friends at HammerHead, we’ve got the barrel we’ve been waiting for."

"This is a great product that offers loyal Tippmann players the very best accuracy technology in paintball," said Paul Judson, vice president of HammerHead. "Others have attempted rifling using straight rifling or perpendicular spiral porting to create rotation, with questionable success. But, the HammerHead technology that has been integrated into the new StraightLine uses helix and spiral rifling, in combination with reverse porting, to control ball rotation and minimize the pressure wave and air turbulence at the muzzle – resulting in significantly straighter, more accurate shots."

The special edition StraightLine barrel will be sold in a complete kit featuring three sizers, a carrying case and lithium grease. It will be available in mid-June 2008 for $149 at select paintball retailers nationwide. However, the new barrel is set to debut at Oklahoma D-Day, June 9-15, where The Hellions from CPX and the SPC team from Glasgow Scotland are scheduled to storm the field using the StraightLine. For additional details, please call Tippmann Sports at 1-800-533-4831. More specific product information is also available at tippmann.com." -end-

There was a day when Tippmann was an innovating force in the paintball industry, some of those innovators were teammates of mine(who were forced out or quit with some changes a few years back). Now at Tippmann it is like they are going back to the Stone Age trying to re-invent the square wheel. Guess what boys, its ain't going to work.

There have been many different attempts by paintball manufacturers to rifle barrels before, all have met with failure to improve the accuracy or trajectory of the paintball. The list for reasons it doesn’t work goes on, but lets just say that spherical, lightweight, breakable projectiles where the majority of the projectile’s mass is in liquid form don’t take well to rifling.

Building the Blog

I’m going to spend the next week or so devoting time towards compiling lists of the local NorthWest fields, teams, events and other resources. If anyone has something to add or notice anything that I missed or made a mistake on, please let me know.

A Quick Trip Down Memory Lane:

A Quick Trip Down Memory Lane:

I grew up in an “overprotective” home so I was involved in the paintball community before I ever started actually playing. I joined the Tippmann Inc. forum in ’94 and stirred up a little trouble but also found friends whom I would meet in person a few years later. I started playing in 1996 (with the new freedom of being 16) cutting my teeth at an indoor warehouse with pumps and motorcycle masks (Bill & Jims if anyone remembers)

I met up with some of the local people on the Tippmann Forum and the 3 of us started playing regularly in the area, mostly at Hole in the Wall paintball park. We and the others from the forum started a scenario paintball team Old Men & Heavy Weights (OMHW) which earned quite a lot of recognition in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Team members were spread across the country as we all met online and eventually the unofficially dissolved as the logistics of keeping the team together became too much. What’s left of the team still communicates at http://www.omhw.net/ forums but we rarely gather at paintball events anymore.

Also, my 2 local paintball team mates moved from the Seattle area and soon after I re-entered college, I no longer found time, money or interest for much paintball.

There, now I’m feeling all nostalgic, but that’s is a quick run down on me and paintball. I’m ready for the next chapter, I hope paintball will be as good to me in the future as it has in the past.

If by some miracle someone is actually reading this, post a comment at tell me who you are.

Let's get this party started

I guess that I should start this blog with a statement of purpose. I have been paintballing in the Seattle area since '96. There have been a lot of changes in the sport, in the area, and in myself during that time and there are sever goals which I hope to accomplish. They are:

  • Join/start as Western Washington scenario team who believes that honor, safety and fun are even more important than winning.
  • Do what I can to grow the scenario and rec ball community in the Northwest.
  • Provide and trade tips with other players and help the development of new players.
  • Review the different fields in the Northwest.
  • Have a place to release my rants
  • Be an information portal for upcoming activities at local fields
  • By having a blog, I hope to get my self to play more.

Life has gotten in the way of this sport that I love (I have only played once in the past 2 years). Now that I have graduated college and a job that leaves my weekends free, I'm making a comeback baby!!!
